Website Accessibility Benchmark: What Are the Most Common Barriers on Business Websites?

What Is the Difference Between AI Citations, Mentions, and Recommendations?

An AI mention names a business in an answer. An AI citation links to a page used as a visible source. An AI recommendation presents the business as a relevant option for the user’s need. One response may contain all three, but each represents a different level of visibility. None proves endorsement, accuracy, traffic, or a future sale.

Your next step: get started by recording how your business appears in a fixed set of AI questions. Then contact SRP if you need help separating mentions, citations, and recommendations in your reporting.

This guide is built for business owners, CEOs, managers, and marketing decision-makers at companies with approximately 5 to 250 employees.

Why Does the Difference Between Mentions, Citations and Recommendations Matter?

The difference between mentions, citations, and recommendations matters because each result answers a different business question. A mention shows that the brand entered the answer. A citation shows that a specific page was presented as a source. A recommendation shows that the business entered the user’s consideration set for a particular need.

So treating the three results as one metric can create a misleading report. A company may receive many mentions but no links. It may earn citations for educational content without being recommended as a provider. It may also be recommended from third-party information without receiving a citation to its own website.

How Do AI Mentions, Citations and Recommendations Compare?

AI mentions, citations, and recommendations can be compared by examining what appears in the answer, what the result suggests, and how it should be measured.

Result What appears What it indicates How to measure it
Mention The company or brand is named, with or without a link. The business is present in the answer. Mention rate, accuracy and context.
Citation A source reference or clickable link points to a page. The page was surfaced as supporting material for part of the answer. Citation rate, cited URLs and referral traffic.
Recommendation The company is presented as an option for a stated need. The business entered the tested consideration set. Recommendation rate, position, context and accuracy.

What Is an AI Brand Mention?

An AI brand mention is an appearance of the company’s name, product, service, or another recognizable brand reference in an AI-generated answer. The mention may be linked or unlinked, positive or negative, accurate or inaccurate. Context matters as much as presence.

However, a mention does not reveal where the platform learned the information. The answer may reflect model knowledge, a live search, a connected source, user-provided context, or a combination of signals. Without a visible source or platform-specific evidence, businesses should not claim that a mention came from training data or from a particular page.

What Should You Record About a Mention?

A useful mention record should capture more than a yes or no result. Record the following information.

  • Exact wording. Save the company name and the sentence or paragraph in which it appeared.
  • Accuracy. Check services, locations, people, credentials, pricing claims, and other material facts.
  • Context. Classify the mention as descriptive, comparative, positive, neutral, negative, or uncertain.
  • Prominence. Record whether the brand appeared early, late, or only after a follow-up question.
  • Test conditions. Save the prompt, platform, product or mode, date, location when relevant, and whether web search was enabled.

What Is an AI Website Citation?

An AI website citation is a visible source reference that links to a webpage, document, or other retrievable resource associated with an answer. ChatGPT responses that use web search may include citations that users can open to review the source, according to OpenAI (2026). Perplexity also describes its web-grounded answers as including inline citations, according to Perplexity (2026).

However, a citation only indicates that a source was presented with the answer. It does not automatically prove that the cited page supports every nearby sentence, that the platform agrees with the publisher, or that a user clicked the link. Citation quality must be reviewed separately from citation presence.

What Makes a Citation Valuable?

A citation becomes more valuable when it supports a relevant claim, points to the correct page, and gives the user a useful next step. Review four dimensions.

  • Relevance. Does the cited page directly address the user’s question?
  • Support. Does the page contain evidence for the claim associated with the citation?
  • Destination quality. Is the landing page current, accurate, usable, and appropriate for the visitor’s intent?
  • Business response. Did the citation produce measurable sessions, engagement, inquiries, or another meaningful action?

What Is an AI Recommendation?

An AI recommendation occurs when the answer presents a company, product, service, or resource as a relevant option for the user’s stated need. The language may be direct, such as a shortlist of providers, or qualified, such as an option that fits particular criteria.

However, a recommendation is not necessarily an endorsement by the AI provider, a permanent ranking, or proof that the business is objectively the best choice. The result depends on the exact question, location, model, retrieval conditions, available evidence, and other context. Recommendation quality should therefore be judged by relevance and accuracy, not presence alone.

Can One AI Answer Contain All Three Results?

One AI answer can contain a mention, citation, and recommendation at the same time. For example, an answer may name a company, recommend it for a specific type of project, and link to one of its service pages as a source. Another answer may mention the same company without a link or cite its research without recommending its services.

SRP uses a four-stage visibility ladder to keep the outcomes separate. The stages are accurate presence, supported source visibility, relevant consideration, and measurable business response. Unlike reports that combine everything into one visibility score, the ladder shows which stage needs work. It is a reporting framework, and brands do not always move through the stages in a fixed order.

  • Accurate presence. The business appears, and the material facts are correct.
  • Supported source visibility. A useful page from the business or another credible source is cited.
  • Relevant consideration. The business is included as an appropriate option for the tested need.
  • Business response. The result contributes to a visit, inquiry, opportunity, or another documented outcome.

How Should a Business Measure Mentions, Citations and Recommendations?

A business should measure mentions, citations, and recommendations with a repeatable prompt set, documented test conditions, and separate rates for each result. Avoid combining every signal into one unexplained visibility score. For a complete measurement guide, read How Do You Measure AI Search Visibility, Citations and Website Traffic?

Which Questions Should You Test?

The questions should represent how real buyers research the business, its services, and possible alternatives. Use four groups.

  • Branded questions. What is [your company name]? What services does [your company name] provide?
  • Non-branded buyer questions. Which companies provide [service] in [location]? Who helps [type of business] solve [problem]?
  • Comparison questions. Which providers should a buyer compare for [service]? What should a business consider when choosing a [provider type]?
  • Problem and solution questions. How can a business solve [problem]? What are the first steps for improving [desired outcome]?

Which Rates Can You Calculate?

The rates below summarize a defined test set. Every report should disclose the platforms, prompts, dates, and eligibility rules used in the calculation.

  • Mention rate. Eligible prompts that mention the company divided by all eligible prompts tested, multiplied by 100.
  • Citation rate. Eligible prompts that cite the company’s domain divided by all eligible prompts tested, multiplied by 100.
  • Recommendation rate. Eligible non-branded and comparison prompts that recommend the company divided by all eligible prompts in those groups, multiplied by 100.
  • Accuracy rate. Brand-containing answers without a material factual error divided by all answers that mention the brand, multiplied by 100.

For example, a company mentioned in 12 of 40 eligible tests has an observed mention rate of 30 percent for that documented test set. The result is not a market-wide impression share and should not be presented as one.

Can Analytics Track Traffic From AI Citations?

Analytics can track some visits from AI citations when a user clicks a link, and the referral information reaches the website. Review the AI Assistant channel or relevant session sources in Google Analytics 4, then examine landing pages, engagement, key events, and qualified outcomes.

However, referral reporting is incomplete. Apps, browser settings, redirects, consent choices, and platform behavior can remove or change referral information. A citation may also influence a later branded search, direct visit, or phone call. Report recorded AI referrals as observed traffic, not as a complete count of AI influence.

Can You See What People Ask AI Platforms?

Businesses generally cannot see the questions individual users enter into ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, or other consumer AI platforms. The platforms do not provide website owners with complete query-level reporting comparable to Google Search Console. This protects user privacy. As a result, businesses cannot see the exact prompt behind a mention, citation, recommendation, or website visit.

So controlled prompt testing shows how selected platforms respond to documented questions. It does not reveal private conversations or every question asked about a market.

What Should a Business Improve First?

A business should improve factual accuracy and source quality before trying to increase the raw number of mentions. Strong visibility begins with information that platforms and people can understand, verify, and use.

For example, basic gaps are common. We analyzed 321 small business websites, and our data shows that 78 percent had no JSON-LD structured data, according to SRP (2026). See the full AI visibility benchmark.

  • Correct public company facts. Use consistent names, services, locations, leadership information, and contact details across the website and trusted profiles.
  • Publish direct answers. Answer real buyer questions in clear language under logical headings.
  • Support important claims. Use original data, named authors, dates, methods, case studies and links to primary evidence.
  • Strengthen relevant pages. Give each service, product, location, and research resource a clear purpose and useful information.
  • Earn independent corroboration. Pursue accurate mentions from reputable associations, partners, directories, media and industry sources.
  • Measure consistently. Repeat the same core prompt set and track citations, accuracy, traffic, and business outcomes separately.

How Does the SRP AI Visibility Audit Fit Into This Process?

The SRP AI Visibility Audit fits into the process as a readiness diagnostic. It checks issues that can be detected automatically, including selected access, structure, entity, and content signals. It does not prove that an AI platform currently mentions, cites, or recommends the business.

So check your own website. Get started with SRP’s free online AI Visibility Audit to identify issues that can be detected automatically and receive a practical plan showing what to review or improve. It is self-service and requires no appointment.

What Can the Audit and Testing Not Guarantee?

The audit and testing cannot guarantee a future mention, citation, recommendation, ranking, lead, or sale. AI answers change as models, indexes, source selection, prompts, and user context change. A result recorded today is evidence of one documented test, not a permanent position.

For example, automated website checks also cannot validate every off-site source, judge every factual nuance, or observe private prompts. Manual review remains necessary for answer accuracy, citation support, recommendation context, and business impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Brand Mention the Same as a Citation?

A brand mention is not the same as a citation. A mention names the company. A citation provides a visible source reference or link. One answer may contain both, either one, or neither.

Is an AI Citation the Same as a Recommendation?

An AI citation is not the same as a recommendation. A platform may cite a company’s article as a useful source without presenting the company as a provider. It may also recommend a company while citing an independent directory or review rather than the company’s website.

Does a Citation Mean the AI Platform Trusts the Entire Website?

A citation does not mean the AI platform trusts or endorses the entire website. It shows that a particular source was presented with an answer. Review whether the cited page supports the relevant claim and whether the representation is accurate.

Can a Business Be Recommended Without Receiving a Website Link?

A business can be recommended without receiving a link to its website. The answer may name the company based on available information while citing another source or showing no visible citation. Record the recommendation and citation as separate results.

How Often Should a Business Repeat the Tests?

A business should repeat its core prompt set monthly or quarterly, and after meaningful changes to services, locations, content, or technical access. Keep the questions and test conditions stable enough to compare periods, while documenting any necessary changes.

Methodology and Limitations

The SRP framework separates observed answers from interpretation. Each test should record the exact prompt, platform, product or mode, date, relevant location, account state, search setting, answer, citations, competitors, and material factual errors. Results should be repeated across a defined prompt set rather than inferred from one response.

AI outputs are probabilistic and can vary between runs. Platform interfaces and citation behavior also change. The framework measures documented observations and recorded traffic. It does not provide access to private user prompts, a complete count of AI impressions, or a universal ranking across all users.
